Prof. Jonathan Wong Woon Chung is currently the Head and Professor of the Department of Biology at the Hong Kong Baptist University where he has taught since 1992. He received his Ph.D. in Environmental Science from Murdoch University, Western Australia.
He is the Director of Institute of Bioresource and Agriculture, the Sino-Forest Applied Research Centre for Pearl River Delta Environment and Hong Kong Organic Resource Centre.
Prof. Wong more than any other single scientist formulated the field of converting biomass to bioresource in Hong Kong from academic study to industrial applications. He is still very much in the area of research with added flavors of sustainability, low-carbon life style, contaminant-free food, bioenergy, biomass, to achieve “a cleaner environment for all”.
As a scientist with citations of more than 14000, H-index of 69, he has received over HK$180 million of research funding and published over 500 SCI publications and conference proceedings. His research excellence was reflected by being elected as an Academician of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, and Fellow of the International Bioprocess Association and the Hong Kong Institute of Qualified Environmental Professionals.
With his extensive professional knowledge, Prof. Wong has contributed to the formulation of local environmental policies as Chairman or member of 26 Government committees in the past 20 years. Prof. Wong was bestowed with Medal of Honor by the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2011 for his service and contribution to the Environment, and appointed as Justice of Peace in 2014.
